SJD Display Home Wins National Greensmart Award!
We’re very proud to announce that our Z-Range Display Home – The Zenith, which is located at Timbertop Estate – was this week announced the national winner of the 2019 HIA Australian Greensmart Display/Project Home category.
The Z-Range display is a zero net carbon, energy efficient home (which was officially opened by the Environment Minister in October 2018) that is designed to be adaptable to today’s housing market and block sizes, whilst remaining affordable to the average homebuyer budget. The energy efficient features and building practices of the home result not only in a healthier, more comfortable lifestyle for families, but aims to save homeowners thousands on power bills.
The judges commented: “the Z-Range is a compact, conventional design representative of the kind of energy-efficient homes that could be, and should be, built in the display home market”. Winners from across Australia were recognised for their contribution to sustainable building. In congratulating the winners, HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards represent the latest in environmental design and building practices. “HIA Australian GreenSmart Award winners and finalists are leading the way in sustainable building practices, including site management and energy saving techniques, to build comfortable homes for their clients,” Mr Wolfe said.
Our Z-Range ZEH display home was created in collaboration with Dr. Josh Byrne, CSIRO, SECCCA, Parklea Developments and Sustainability Victoria. In addition to passive solar design and thermal building materials, we worked closely with building performance assessors specialising in energy efficient build verification including air tightness of the building envelope during construction, insulation and blower door tests. The energy rating for the home is 7.3 stars with a VRES rating of 10 stars.
The average Australian home produces 7 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. With 100,000 detached homes built in Australia each year that’s 700,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficient homes make sense not only for the financial benefit to the home owner with reduced energy bills, but for the future of the planet. Modelling has found these purpose-built homes could almost halve energy costs and cut greenhouse gas emissions by around six tonnes a year compared to a standard new home.
SJD Homes is passionate about the environment and sustainable homes. In 2018 SJD Homes was also selected as one of three Victorian builders for the Zero Net Carbon Homes (ZNCH) pilot program with Sustainability Victoria. We continue to work with Sustainability Victoria towards offering consumers affordable and certified energy efficient homes based on our Z-Range display home model.
